Detection Dogs Ready for Service at the
Regional Justice Center and Family Court Complex
The Eighth Judicial District Court is proud to welcome two Detection Dogs into the ranks of its Marshals Division. Jewel and Smokey, along with their handlers, Deputy Marshal Long and Deputy Marshal Pascual, are recent graduates of the Gold Coast K9 Detection Training Program in Ventura, California, a rigorous curriculum for training dogs to detect specified target odors and communicate the presence of those odors to their handlers through a “controlled passive alert.” Detection Dogs can be trained to perform a variety of tasks, including sniffing out contraband items, such as narcotics, firearms and explosives.
Jewel and Smokey will provide detection services under the control of their respective handlers at the Regional Justice Center and Family Court Complex to help ensure all courthouse visitors are able to safely access the court and the various services it provides to the public.

Building and courtroom sweeps are listed among the best practices recommended by the National Center for State Courts, especially during high-risk or high visibility trials. Chief Judge Wiese met Jewel and Smokey and stated, “I love dogs and I am excited to announce the implementation of our K-9 units in our continuing effort to provide the safest and most secure environment possible for our Judges, our court employees, and those who visit our courthouses each day.”
