Walter Abrego has been selected as the new jury commissioner of the Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada.

Walter Abrego has been selected as the new jury commissioner of the Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada. Abrego worked in jury services for nearly four years and served as the acting jury commissioner prior to being selected for the post.

“We are happy to have Walter Abrego step into the role of jury commissioner,” said Chief Judge Jerry Wiese. “His institutional experience will be an asset in working with the 32 Civil/Criminal Division departments and the incoming chief judge. I look forward to working regularly with Walter seating juries, when I turn over the administrative responsibilities of chief judge, and return to hearing and disposing of cases as a civil/criminal division judge.”

Judge Tierra Jones will take over as chief judge of the Eighth Judicial District Court in July, and Judge Jerry Wiese will return to carrying a full docket of cases after serving as chief judge for four years. Chief judges are elected by the bench and can only serve in the role of chief for four years, when they return to carrying a regular docket.

“Throughout his tenure with Jury Services, Walter has demonstrated that he has an exceptional understanding of the jury process and has dedicated himself to ensuring that the Eighth Judicial District Court’s jury process is efficient, thorough, and effective. He has always provided a positive attitude to all of those who have had the experience of working with him. Walter definitely possesses the knowledge and experience to handle the challenges of the jury commissioner post,” said Chief Judge Elect Jones.

Prior to his role in jury services, Walter worked in the evidence vault for five years as a records technician. He also worked in the Clerk’s Office as a legal office assistant, and in the Discovery Division. He has a Bachelor’s degree in project management from the College of Southern Nevada and is a Rancho High School graduate.

“I am ready for this exciting new challenge. I have a great team of employees and a wonderful mentor in the prior jury commissioner Mariah Witt,” said Walter Abrego. “We are prepared to work with our community to ensure juries are seated in an efficient manner.”
