The Eighth Judicial District Court Felony DUI (FDUI) Program has been awarded $263,344 from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety for fiscal year 2025/2026. The money will go to reduce DUI recidivism.

“The results of DUIs are often tragic. This Nevada Office of Traffic Safety funding is key to intervening on chronic DUI offending and making our community roads safer,” said District Court Chief Judge Jerry Wiese. “Changing lifestyles and addictions is difficult. The felony DUI program gets those with multiple DUIs into intensive treatment and supervision while never losing sight of public safety.”

The Eighth Judicial District Court hears the highest volume of felony DUI cases in the state. The three to five year FDUI specialty court program has an active caseload of around 312 participants. The program, aimed at those with at least three felony DUIs, is deemed a best-practice shown to reduce recidivism and increase public safety through intensive supervision and treatment. The FDUI court involves judges, coordinators, clinicians, case managers, public defenders, district attorneys, probation officers, lab technicians, and medical professionals. The collaborative approach is tailored to participant needs.  The approach has proven to be effective in changing behavior and is endorsed by Governor’s Highway Safety Association.

The funding will go to support the salaries of the FDUI court coordinators. The role of coordinators in FDUI court is to assess the participant to determine level of care, provide supervision, clinical input for treatment planning, and provide case management for all participants in the FDUI program.

The felony DUI program is one of the Eighth Judicial District specialty courts that solve issues through a rigorous and coordinated approach between judges, specialty court coordinators, prosecutors, defense attorneys, Parole and Probation, law enforcement and mental health/social service/treatment professionals. All work together to help participants recover, live crime-free and be-come productive citizens. District Court continuously works to develop innovative ideas, improve efficiencies, address issues and improve access to justice.
