Eighth Judicial District Court Chief Judge T. Arthur Ritchie Jr. visited the Clark County Election Department this afternoon (Dec. 16) to present a proclamation of thanks to Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax. The Election Department assisted the District Court in 2009 by archiving more than five million pages of court documents.
The archival project was undertaken to help the District Court begin the conversion to a paperless court. Court documents and historical records must be archived, scanned into electronic documents, and cataloged before the court can consider disposal of the paper records. The Election Department achieved a near perfect archival record and saved Clark County $317,000 in labor costs. The Election Department's full-time and part-time employees spent six months archiving and cataloging the court's paper records of lawsuits, motions and court minutes for thousands of case files.
The monumental job achieved by the Election Department represents roughly 30-percent of the files currently stored in the Regional Justice Center. Approximately 12 million pages must still be archived by the court.
