Who does the Neighborhood Justice Center train?

The NJC trains on request.  There are no classes offered on a regular basis that may be signed up for.  Requests may come from groups. The following groups have requested training in the past:

1. Businesses
2. Community Organizations
3. Educational Organizations
4. Governmental Groups

Mediation training is an exception to this. See below for description and more details.

What kind of training does the NJC do?

The NJC trains in a variety of conflict resolution related topics which include the following:

1. Advanced Mediation Skills
2. Alliance Building
3. Basic Mediation
4. Communication Skills
5. Conflict Resolution
6. Consensus Building
7. Negotiation Skills
8. Valuing Diversity
   

The NJC offers monthly continuing eduction for mediator trained through the NJC or collaborating agencies,

How much time does training take?

1. The number of participants
2. The amount of time available
3. The skills participants wish to learn

The NJC customizes each training that it offers based on the skills participants wish to learn, the number of participants, and the time available.  In general, learning one skill requires 1 hours of training.

How much does training cost?

There is generally no charge for training with a couple of exceptions:

1. Training for organizations that are business for profit
2. A 40 hour Mediation training program is $500 ($600 with CLE's).
3. There is a sliding scale for demonstratied need.

What about mediation training?

The NJC offers a 36 or 40-hour mediation training from 1 to 4 timers a year. The training is offered to those who are selected to participate through an application and interview process.

Basic mediation training is compsed of 10 units of study:

1. Introduction
2. Mediation Process
3. Conflict
4. Personal Assessment
5. Communication
6. Mediation Practice
7. Ethical Practice
8. Mediation Techniques
9. Applications
10. Resources
    

To earn NJC mediation credentials, mediators must:

1. Attend a 36-40 hour basic mediation training course
2. Complete a prcticum composed of 3 observations and 4 mentored mediations
3. Complete a final mediation, demonstratingg skill, with the training coorinator 

To maintain credentialed status with the NJC, mediators must:

1. Conduct a minimum of 4 mediations per year
2. Attend a minimum of 8 hours of continuing education per year.

Continuing education for mediators is offered on a monthly basis for NJC volunteers and mediators who have completed the NJC Basic Mediation Training.

Subjects vary from year to year, but serve to advance mediation skills and practice.
